If you don’t have the money to purchase a property in Singapore, renting a place is your next best option. Though prices tend to be a bit higher than most people are used to (unless you’re from Manhattan or Paris), it still beats paying a hefty hotel bill. The good news is, rental prices were actually on the high side when the market was at its peak back in 2007 but this year the prices have gone down significantly and are even more attractive for tenants to get a bargain.

Most reasonable priced properties
If you’re looking for a relative bargain on this tiny island, then consider renting an apartment in one of the many public housing projects, or HDB housing. While some of the smaller unit flats in these public housing projects might not be suitable for your needs, you can find some nice units in some of the better projects. Prices range anywhere from $1,600 a month in the outlying areas for a three-bedroom flat to $2,500 a month in a more centrally located part of town.

Other properties
A non-public housing property can run anywhere from $2,000 to $10,000 per month, depending upon the apartment’s location and the number of bedrooms. You can even spend up to $15,000 for some of the bigger places with terraces. Here’s an idea of some prices according to the neighborhood.

• Orchard Road – This area is prime real estate, located in downtown Singapore. Rents go for about $5,000 to $15,000 per month for a three-bedroom apartment, which varies from about 1,300 sq. feet to 2,500sq. feet
• River Valley area – Located just southwest of the Orchard Road area, this prime location fetches anywhere from $5,000 to $9,000 as well.
• East Coast – This area, which is located on the southeastern section of the island, is a bit cheaper. Prices run around $3,500 onwards for the same size property. This area is popular since it’s close to the airport and the beach.
• West Coast – The west coast area, located on the opposite end of the island, is priced even cheaper than the east coast section. Rents are going for $2,500 onwards for the three-bedroom apartment.
• North district – The northern part of the island offers rentals from around $2,500 onwards as well. Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) makes this area a convenient option.
